8/30/2023 0 Comments Arrow reddit lian yu![]() ![]() Yes, she shows up in fights and screams and hits people with sticks, and is there for supportive advice from time to time, but the show rarely ever gives her the time of day. Killing her now would almost seem to be out of boredom, rather than any purposeful arc for her character. The show has just never really known what to do with Laurel for so, so long now. The major conflict was between Oliver and Diggle, where Diggle’s brother sold them out to Darhk as Oliver predicted. She was the B-plot at best, debating whether or not to become DA under the new evil mayor. Last night, she wasn’t even the focus of her own death episode. And her biggest arc ever on the show was probably the short period of training time after Sarah’s (second) death where she became the new Black Canary. Probably not since the brief window of time that they were resurrecting Sarah, and dealing with her newfound bloodlust. ![]() Most shows will kill off characters after they’re given significant arcs, but Laurel has hadn’t one in…ages. If she is really dead, that’s a different kind of issue. So, should we trust that Laurel Lance has been killed in such an unspectacular, confusing fashion? I’m not so sure. And though it’s overlooked, I’ll never forget another cliffhanger where literally almost the entire cast was trapped in a poison gas chamber, and we were supposed to believe they all choked to death, before it was revealed that was misdirection. Oliver was gored with a sword and kicked off the side of a mountain in a cliffhanger that made us believe he died, yet he survived and was nursed back to health. Thea was brought back from certain death by the Pit as well. Sarah Lance, the original Black Canary, was killed twice and brought back twice, the second time using the Lazarus Pit so she could run off and star on Legends of Tomorrow. After initially having a good run of killing major characters permanently (Tommy Merlyn, Moira Queen), once the League of Assassins showed up, everything kind of went off the rails. Obviously, it’s tough to trust Arrow here, as the show has misled us so many times at this point by pretend a character was dead, or almost dead, only to bring them back. A way to fake her death (some Lian-Yu embolism drug Oliver keeps on his person? his magic tattoo?) and then have her work on taking down Darhk/Merlyn from the shadows. But that would be a poor plan, as now Oliver has to let Diggle sit with the guilt of Laurel's death, not to mention the news could have easily killed her father outright, given his heart condition that made Laurel keep Sarah's death from him for half a year. I don’t know the exact sequence of events that might get her to “live” again (the Lazarus pits are destroyed, supposedly), but I would not rule out some kind of elaborate plan she hatched with Oliver. Combining all three of these things, in addition to considering how many times Arrow has faked/negated deaths in the past, has led me to believe we have not seen the last of Laurel.
